The State Emblem of Pakistan was adopted in 1954 and symbolizes the country's ideological foundation, economic basis, cultural heritage, and guiding principles. The emblem consists of four main components: a crescent and star crest above a shield (escutcheon), surrounded by a floral wreath, with a scroll below.
The crest and the green color of the emblem are traditional symbols of Islam. The shield at the center is quartered to depict cotton, wheat, tea, and jute—major crops of Pakistan at the time of independence. These crops highlight the agricultural foundation of the nation's economy.
The floral wreath surrounding the shield features Jasminum officinale, Pakistan's national flower. It reflects the floral motifs commonly seen in traditional Mughal art, emphasizing the country's rich cultural heritage.
The scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in Urdu: "Īmān, Ittiḥād, Naẓm" (ایمان، اتحاد، نظم), which translates to "Faith, Unity, Discipline." These principles are intended to guide the nation.
The emblem was designed by Maraj Muhammad, a student at the National College of Arts.
